Chung Cheng High School just finished hosting it’s biannual Arts Fest. It lasted from the first to the 15th of April, with performances by the performing arts CCA groups.
The opening ceremony of the Arts Fest was held on the first of April in the Singapore National Library Board Main Branch. The calligraphy club was there to grace the ceremony. Mr Pang Choon How, our ex-principal who left the school last year, even visited the opening ceremony.
One of the calligraphy club members, Goh Yee Shyan, recounted her experience when she was interacting with Mr Pang. “Through this meeting with Mr Pang, I realised how good of a principal he was and how much we didn’t cherish him when he was still with us. Seeing him now makes me so happy and I’m glad he’s doing well in MOE now!”
Choir performed the first performance of the Arts Fest. Collaborating with Nan Hua Choir, the CCHMS choir organised their performance in the concert hall of the School Of The Arts (SOTA), Singapore.
“This is our first choir concert in about 5 years, so it’s pretty significant to us. And even though we have various performances within this 5 years, it’s scale is not as big as this one.” said choir performer Jee Kai Xin.
The following week, the Chinese Orchestra collaborated with the Concert Band of the school to present an orchestra performance. They played songs like Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, Star Wars OST and classics such as The Moon represents My Heart (月亮代表我的心). The Dance Club also presented to the school the most anticipated concert, Aspire’16. Pushing the Arts Fest to its climax, about a thousand people attended the concert. This is also the first time the dancers are organising and choreographing the concert themselves.
The Guzheng ensemble of the school, together with both the Drama Societies of the school, ended the Arts Fest with their performances. The Chinese Drama Club presented their 5 short skits that are comical, funny, yet reflects what our society is like. From gay rights to corruption, the skits make us ponder what the world we live in is really like. The Guzheng Ensemble performed several classical pieces that won them many awards in the past. The Engish Drama Club performed a play named ‘The Island’ and it was based on the novel, Lord of the Flies by William Golding.
“The play centres around a literary novel, The Lord Of The Flies, which is a novel that all of our O-level literature students are studying on, which makes it even more, so important to not only the actors on stage, but also the audience members, as it might just be the turning point in their literature lives, which makes them actually, for once be interested to study more about the novel which they will be sitting an exam for in a very short time.” said Athena Wee from the English Drama Club.
Athena also stated, “I think the audience really enjoyed our play very much as we received a lot of wonderful positive critique from the audience right after the show ended! It was so overwhelming and we were so satisfied with our performance.”
